Clark International Airport—Without much fanfare, the ceremonial handover of the new passenger terminal building of the Clark International Airport (CRK) was held here Friday.
The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA)-Department of Transportation (DOTr) accepted the certificate of completion for the new passenger terminal building from the joint venture of GMR-Megawide which constructed the building.
The BCDA-DOTr in turn, handed over the new passenger terminal to its operations and maintenance partner, Luzon International Premier Airport Development (LIPAD) Corp. for the final fit-out prior to opening and full operations.
LIPAD CEO Bi Young Chungunco said the new passenger terminal is designed to serve 8.2 million passengers and would be fully operational in July this year.
“We committed and we delivered. Nineteen domestic and 14 international destinations serving a total of more than 700 flights by 20 airlines,” she said describing LIPAD’s first year of operating CRK.
“We hit 4 million passengers and that is why it is time for us to move to this new terminal with a capacity of 8.2 million passengers,” she added.
Chungunco also said the old terminal would be converted into a “mass vaccination facility for 10,000 people a day.”
“We are committed to use the existing terminal to be used as a mass vaccination facility and our services to provide seamless and comfortable experience for our vaccinees our facility would be ready to vaccinate more than 10,000 people a day,” she said.
Newly elected chair of the House Special Committee on Bases Conversion, Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., emphasized CRK’s role as a catalyst of progress. “We envisioned this to be Asia’s next premiere gateway which will help foster economic growth. This is indeed a testament of the government’s goal in making Clark the next premiere metropolis of Asia and putting our country one step closer to progress and prosperity.”
